Book recommendation: Globalization of Love

Globalization of Love – Creating the Future Ambassadors of Peace

519oNDTdRaL._SX330_BO1,204,203,200_As consultants, we are so busy focusing on the impact of culture on the business or political environments that we overlook where differences in culture really get personal and heated – between two people in love.   Wendy Williams has put a microscope to these relationships by interviewing dozens of multi-cultural couples and has written a funny, insightful and recognizable book called the Globalization of Love.  If you are a GloLo couple, you will nod your head in agreement as you read about dating, choosing a place to live, planning the wedding, dealing with in-laws, raising children – all with the extra thrill and complication of the international couple.  As I am part of a GloLo couple (me American, he Dutch), I was impressed by Wendy’s well-researched examples, and hilarious insights into our international lives.

With this in mind, I was excited to attend the TED talk Wendy Williams presented on 6 May, 2016 in Vienna.  With humor and warmth, Wendy highlighted examples from her book with a powerful closing message – the GloLo couples are creating the futures ambassadors of peace, specifically the GloLo children.  These cute, multi-lingual, border crossing (to visit grandma) little diplomats are attuned to the nuances of different cultures and contexts, understand the concept of multiple perspectives, and appreciate that love is international.   Love, liefde, amour, 爱 – crossing borders!
